Find Cezanne’s favourite spot in Marseille and discover the city’s creative heart

Like a local, Creative vibes, City tips

When you visit a city, you have two options: Either you look for the clichés or you try to discover its real character.

If you are up for the second option, Hotel du Nord is the right thing for you. Real homes instead of hostels, real stories instead of rumours. That’s the concept. Real Marseillais, like our host Vincent, welcome you to their homes and show you what it is like to live in their city. Vincent showed us around his neighbourhood called L’Estaque and brought us to a place which you should not miss while in Marseille: La Déviation. This arts centre is open for those who need space for their creativity. Theatre, sculpture, music recording … the building complex has a room for every kind of art.

Inspired by this limitless place and impressed by the blue of the Mediterranean Sea, the white cotton candy clouds and the cliffs, you will feel the need to capture the view. And you won’t be the first. This unique view of the Gulf of Marseille has inspired many artists before you. Paul Cézanne loved to draw the view from L’Estaque. Explore the area and try to find the exact spots where his masterpieces came to life. Little hint: when you find La Déviation and take the street that leads upwards, you can’t miss it.

Enjoy diving into real life in Marseille and discover the artist in you!

I understand why Cézanne couldn’t get enough of l’Estaque. It is beautiful and La Déviation is one of the most inspiring places I have ever visited. I am glad we stayed with Vincent from Hotel du Nord who showed us all of this.
